One of man's luxuries in life has definitely been the bath tub. From time to time he has made different types of tubs to suit his purpose as well as to soak in its comfort. Among the various types of tubs, the claw foot variety became well known in the middle of the nineteenth century. Initially, the claw foot tubs were graceful to look at. They had soft, rolled edges and a slanted body, like the traditional claw foot soaking tubs, to enable the bather to recline. The legs were usually carved resembling lion's paws. The baths then were fragrant. Natural materials were used then instead of chemicals that are used today.

This is not a story of the past .If one wishes to experience the same comfort the claw foot bath tubs are there once again in the market. The claw foot tubs are usually 4 to 5 feet long but the size can be changed according to the preferences of the buyer. These are now the latest craze. The claw foot soaking tubs are deep and the slanting body of the tub makes the bath an enjoyable experience. Staying in the tub for hours, does not cause fatigue or any physical problems. They are a class apart, in style.

The color of the deep claw foot soaking tubs earlier was derived from the porcelain covering that was placed on top of the iron body. The smooth finish and the white color came from the porcelain used. The claw foot soaking tubs were popular not only in Europe but also in the United States. However, they lost their place to the in- built tubs which invaded the consumer market in the first half of the 1900s. The designs differed according to the place of manufacture. The European ones had wall- mounted taps and other hardware that went with it, whereas the American tubs had faucets that were mounted on the tub itself.

Nowadays, the material mostly used is acrylic. The cast iron bath tubs are heavier and rust with use but the acrylic tubs do not rust and are much lighter. They also have a polished finish which lends a glamorous look. The non- corrosive nature of the material makes it last longer.

The slipper tubs are the other variety that is flooding the market these days. The main characteristic feature is a high back support for more comfort. These have double ends that it is possible for the bather to shift position if and when required. Both the ends have the back support for the head and back to rest against. Elegantly designed are the claw foot pedestal tubs. In place of legs they have a carved or delicately designed pedestal. These are more advantageous because the floor doesn't get damaged if the tubs need to be shifted.

Thus there is a huge variety of tubs and at times it may be difficult to decide which one to buy !
